Second Skin
I am a print designer with an innovative and technical approach to textiles with a particular interest in hand print and dye processes. I adore drawing and exploring fabric through embellishment, laser cutting and fabric manipulation.
I was keen to utilise my skills as printer, focusing on the use of handcraft within textile design. My MA project, Second Skin explores the process of exhaust dye and print methods and the use of AF binder as a resist, with a large emphasis on colour. The project began with my fascination of the textures and colours of crystals and minerals, so I decided to experiment with natural dyes, such as henna and logwood that could achieve the same colours and similar “marks” of the minerals.
I also wanted there to be an emphasis of print within my collection so I began to look the patterns of reptile skin. I started to create my own “reptile print” by using drawings of the minerals, using these motifs to create patterns, focusing on producing placement prints for each garment
