Salvaging Selvedges: A Designer’s Perspective on Upcycling Pre-Consumer Industrial Waste

Today, market expansion and environmental degradation are taking place simultaneously. The need of the hour is to use available resources as judiciously and wisely as possible. ‘Salvaging Selvedges’ is a journey of upcycling waste resources which come in the form of selvages from the fashion and textile industry. Along with utilizing waste generated from the industries, the project looks into creating employment for urban Indian women. Thus, ‘Salvaging Selvedges’ encompasses creating employment for Indian women by upcycling pre consumer textile waste.

Bio

Vedika completed her Bachelor’s degree in Textile Design from National Institute of Fashion Technology, New Delhi, India in 2008. Thereafter she worked in an Indian interior products industry, designing home furnishings for them for duration of 1 year. She is recently completed a Masters in Textile Design from Chelsea College of Art and Design, University of the Arts, London, where she was focused on sustainable textiles and waste management strategies in particular.
