A STEP BACK INTO TIME

Leaves, flower buds, tree barks, and grounded herbs all come together in a pot of boiling water.  The colour that seeps from these natural elements leaves an impression on the fabric.  The fabric contains the care of the maker and the fragrance of the natural element it has evolved from. From the cotton seed, to the weaver, to the printer that decorates the fabric with vegetable dyes, the fabric has now become a path of human touch.

A step back into time, is a collection based on the history that has been passed through generations of block printers in India and now has made its way back into the modern society.  Today, to tackle the issues that plague the textile industry’s lack of production control, the fabric is made with awareness of the materials used and discarded into the environment. It is created only from what is capable of going back into nature, making a full circle.

Ruchika Kumar has retraced her footsteps to India to connect with the communities enriched with ancient printing and dyeing traditions. She is working in collaboration with Chhipa Yasin Shahabuddin to create fabric collections made with the utmost care and love by members of the Pipar City community based near Jodhpur, Rajasthan.  Featured alongside is the collection developed in London mimicking the techniques learnt from Chhipa Yasin and fellow artisans.

You are invited to take the journey back into time, where artisans take joy in their labour, paying homage to the earth, and bringing awareness to our footsteps.
