Jemima Hetherington

My work is an investigation into the British Wool industry and its continuing demise. I have been working to develop British wool based products by firstly and fore mostly investigating the inherent properties of the fibre and then designing products that exploit such properties. I am keen to use this undervalued and underused natural resource, abundant in the UK, and improve public opinion of it.

I have been working to develop new and exciting fabrics suitable for interiors, innovating the way in which wool is currently used. I have worked to produce a textile that combines the strengths of industrially manufactured felt with the finesse of screen printing. By experimenting with various printing processes, I have been able to develop a technique that can bring a new dimension and life to an industrial fabric that is normally never seen in its everyday setting but can now be appreciated for its aesthetic beauty.

My passion comes from creating objects that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing. For example, my shutters “Sheepfold”, made from British pine and Swaledale Wool, have been designed to insulate interior spaces and prevent against heat loss via windows or doors.
