Bryde Gordon

During my time on the MA, I attempted growing an acre crop of the linen plant, flax. Linen was once grown extensively in the UK, due to synthetic fibres becoming increasingly popular after the 1950′s the growing and production slowly declined.

I was keen to see if flax could potentially be grown and produced in the UK again, the crop germinated but with very little rain and unexpected disease the crop failed.I then discovered the link between table linen and afternoon tea, as it was a custom to use damask linen tablecloths during dining. My design, drawing and colour inspiration is taken from the fine bone china.

I have used organic linen and recycled table-cloths throughout with the application of hand screen-printing and embroidery.
