Memories are akin to old textured surfaces found in ageing textiles. The delicate distressed natures of old fabrics reflect our precious obscure memories. Just as a stain smudges a fabric, our memories are blurred by repetition and we need to delve through the layers to find those hidden memories – to unfold, discover, comfort and inspire.
Reminiscence is the facility by which individuals are able to recall traces of events that have taken place during their lifetimes and the sharing of these experiences is an inseparable bond that brings together myriad generations. It also enables our elders to appreciate themselves and their own identities.
Textiles are as resilient as the human spirit and my passion for textiles kindles a desire to investigate how fabric can perpetuate memories. The need to archive the narrative of our memories as a vehicle for cultural transmission manifests itself as a fabric of memories which I believe is capable of mending the warp and woof of our lives.
