Tales from tread
I am interested in ‘Roi Malai’ or ‘Making Garland’ (in this literal sense, Roi is Making; Malai or Phuang Malai is Garland). Though it has long existed in Thai culture, it has not been in great attention; therefore, I would like to adapt and create new things from this Thai local wisdom which is a little part of Thai people’s daily life, but is considered as an art that lives with us for ages. From much local knowledge, I decided to work on the method of ‘Roi Malai’ or ‘Making Garland’ which has a very simple process from threading the fresh flowers to becoming the beautiful and exquisite garlands in different patterns and designs. The little flowers being threaded together become many impressive stories for the receivers.
Accordingly, the main concept of my work is ‘telling story through a storybook’. This storybook is about a girl who want to buy her sister a cake luckily her mother has given her a robe with a careful thought that her little girl would get lost. The story brings children to another wonder world which they can take the characters in the story out to actually thread them together to create accessories that are related to the tale and be their own presents or pieces of work that can remind them of the fantasy world. They can also get inside and be imaginative by creating their own story and accessories from the characters they take out from the story book.
